The Scholars Program at the University of Edinburgh will provide postgraduate scholarships to students from Africa with great academic and leadership potential but few educational opportunities.



ON CAMPUS

The Scholars Program at the University of Edinburgh will provide postgraduate scholarships to students from Africa with great academic and leadership potential but few educational opportunities. 


21 scholarships are available for the 2021/22  academic year, which will cover the full tuition fees and expenses for accommodation and maintenance. 

On top of financial support, Scholars will participate in activities as part of the wider Scholars Program at the University of Edinburgh including work-based placements, mentorship, and other activities during the academic year. 

Scholarships are available for the following postgraduate programs: 

  • MSc Africa and International Development

  • MSc Environment and Development

  • MSc Global Health Policy

  • MA Design for Change 

  • MSc Sustainable Energy Systems

  • MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation

  • MSc Finance, Technology and Policy 

  • MSc Food Security 

  • MSc Design Informatics

Eligibility criteria

  • Applicants must have graduated no later than September 2020

  • Applicants must be a resident and citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country. Applicants currently residing outside of this region for education reasons only can still apply 

  • Applicants must demonstrate a track record of leadership and service within their community

  • Applicants are able to present economic circumstances which show they lack financial means to pursue higher education in their home country or elsewhere 

  • Applicants must want to study one of the eligible degree programmes at the University of Edinburgh 

  • Applicants must qualify academically for admission to the degree programme of their choice 

  • Applicants should not have completed a postgraduate degree previously and should not be enrolled at a separate university while on scholarship

  • If you apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program please apply for the scholarship first. If you are successful in the scholarship process, the team will support you to apply for admission to your chosen degree programme.


ONLINE LEARNING


If you are a graduate, or are soon to graduate, as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar from a Mastercard Foundation partner institution, find out more about applying to study a postgraduate qualification online.


  • Gaining an online masters is an excellent way to earn a qualification which is equivalent to on-campus study, while at the same time continuing to work flexibly and live at home. Online Masters qualifications though the University of Edinburgh are fully equivalent to Masters degrees taught on campus.

  • The Scholars Program at the University of Edinburgh will provide postgraduate online scholarships to students from Africa with great academic and leadership potential but few educational opportunities.

  • The scholarship will cover the full tuition fees and a small study stipend to allow for access to high-quality internet. The scholarship is designed to cover three-years of part-time online study.

  • On top of financial support, Scholars will participate in activities as part of the wider Scholars Program with the University of Edinburgh, including regular online workshops with our scholars, online coaching and support, and the opportunity to attend regional scholar-led workshops and events.

2020/21 applications

Applications for September 2020 entry to the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Edinburgh open on Monday, February 3rd 2020 at 10.00 (GMT) and close at 16:00 (GMT) on Monday 16th March 2020.


Eligibility criteria

  • You must be a graduate or be about to graduate as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar in a Mastercard Foundation partner institution. You can currently be studying on a programme but you must have graduated by July 2020 and you must have your final degree certificate and transcript by the end of August 2020 in order to commence you studies in September this year. We do not accept applications from those who are already studying for or have completed a postgraduate/graduate degree.

  • Applicants must qualify academically for admission to the University of Edinburgh for a relevant degree programme listed above. You will generally need to have achieved the equivalent of a UK Second Class (Upper) Bachelors (Hons) degree.   • You must be a citizen of an African country (with the exception of Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco & Tunisia), whose personal circumstances would make accepting an online study offer from the University of Edinburgh difficult.  Applications from Malawi, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe are particularly welcome.

  • You must be able to present economic circumstances which show they lack financial means to pursue higher education in their home country or elsewhere
