ABOUT THE YENCHING GLOBAL SYMPOSIUM
For over a century, Peking University has been the foremost domestic academic setting for understanding China. It has facilitated the work of generations of scholars in the pursuit of a more nuanced and complete understanding of China, in diverse fields such as history, science, economics, and literature. Its students have left its campus to spread this understanding, achieving international success and acclaim in commerce, art, academia, and politics.
In 2014, Peking University founded the Yenching Academy, inviting a global cohort of scholars to join this unique intellectual environment. Yenching Academy provides a rigorous Master’s program for the multidisciplinary study of China, with the hope of cultivating a new generation of global citizens. The fifth cohort of 124 scholars, hailing from 42 countries and regions, have the opportunity to immerse themselves in China and analyze it from a variety of perspectives.
The Academy’s flagship event, the Yenching Global Symposium (YGS), is a continuation of this mission. Hosted at Peking University every spring, the symposium comprises engaging lectures, panel discussions, and interactive sessions addressing both China’s impact on the world and the influence that the world has on China. Each year, the symposium features prominent Chinese and international speakers across a wide range of fields, including both scholars and leading professionals. These leaders of today will share their insights with their potential counterparts: 200 students and young professionals from around the world with a noted passion for China in their work and research.
YGS 2019 received over 6,000 applications, making YGS one of the most competitive academic conferences in Asia. The 98 selected delegates, hailing from 47 countries, joined 83 Yenching Scholars to create a cross-disciplinary gathering of rising global leaders.
The Yenching Global Symposium (YGS) provides a platform for emerging leaders, established practitioners, and Yenching Scholars around the globe to engage in interdisciplinary dialogues on China through the unique lens of the Yenching Academy of Peking University.
By exploring key issues related to China and the world, the Yenching Global Symposium (YGS) seeks to enable emerging leaders, established practitioners and Yenching Scholars to develop informed solutions to global problems.

CHINA IS A RISING LEADER IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING WORLD.
As China’s interaction with the wider international community continues to develop, the two will need to redefine approaches to the world’s long-term sustainability challenges. Sino-Sustainability: Reimagining Global Solutions will explore how China’s experiences could impact the rest of the world by examining China’s approaches in fulfilling demand, allocating resources, and pursuing longevity.
In tackling the broader theme of sustainability in a Chinese and global context, the symposium is organized into three subthemes, bringing together intersectional perspectives across the dimensions of politics, society, environment, economics, and technology.
As the global population continues to grow, the world faces a myriad of challenges in meeting society’s demands while maintaining the international goals of sustainable development. On the first day of the symposium, delegates will discuss how China can help fulfil the demands of an increasingly prosperous but unequal global society.
To escape the middle-income trap, China is reviewing how it allocates resources across traditional and emerging sectors, both domestically and abroad. The second day of the symposium will explore China’s structural transformations and its implications for the rest of the world.
As an emerging world leader, China offers unique solutions to long-term domestic and international sustainability challenges. On the final day of the symposium, delegates will consider the long-term significance of China’s growth and imagine the future relationship between China and the world.
