The University of Gothenburg’s School of Global Studies is offering a fully funded, 4-year PhD position in Peace & Development Research focused on host state responses to transnational repressions. The role includes a competitive monthly salary, research mentorship, and up to 20% departmental duties. The application deadline is August 14, 2026

  • Research Focus: You will analyze how democratic countries translate norms concerning transnational repression into legal and policy responses, focusing on the Nordic-Baltic region (e.g., Sweden, Norway, Estonia).
  • Duration: 4 years of full-time study (1 year of coursework, 3 years for your dissertation).
  • Benefits: Government employee status with full benefits, insurances, and a salary.
  • Start Date: No later than January 2027.
Eligibility & Requirements
  • Education: A second-cycle (Master’s) degree in International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Global Development, or a closely related discipline.
  • Language: Excellent oral and written English, plus proficiency in the relevant languages of your selected case study countries.
  • Application Materials: You will need to submit a research proposal (maximum 2,000 words) outlining your project idea
