Artists are invited to enter works of art for Atomic Artistry, a juried exhibition on the value of nuclear power. With this exhibition, Eco-Nuclear Solutions hopes to engage and show the positive impacts of nuclear power, that it is a clean technology vital in the struggle against climate change, an effective way to protect biodiversity and open space, and it supports the transition to a clean energy economy.

When and where

  • Entry is free.
  • Image submissions will be accepted from December 1, 2023, to February 1, 2024.
  • Finalists will be notified by February 10.
  • Finalists must deliver or ship the ready-to-hang art to Susan Tordella, 5 Hedgeway St., Ayer, Mass 01432, by March 3. Artists are responsible for shipping both ways.
  • The exhibition will be on view from March 3–11, 2024, at the Fitchburg Art Museum’s Community Gallery, 185 Elm St., Fitchburg, Massachusetts, USA.
  • The opening reception will be Saturday, March 9, from 2-4 pm, when winners will be announced and votes can be cast for the People’s Choice award (and until March 30).
  • Artwork may be offered for private sales.

Prizes

Adults:

  • First place: $500
  • Second place: $350
  • Third place: $200
  • People’s choice: $150 (determined by votes by gallery visitors March 1–30)

Under age 18:

  • First place: $100
  • Second place: $60
  • Third place: $40
  • People’s choice: $50 (determined by votes by gallery visitors March 1–30)

Why Take Part?

Atomic Artistry is designed to draw attention to nuclear energy to: break down stereotypes, fears, and misconceptions; encourage discussion and debate; promote a deeper understanding of the transition from fossil fuels; and the role of nuclear power to quickly reduce CO2 emissions while protecting our environment.
Entry is free and open to all, in two divisions: age 18 and younger and adults. Amateurs, professionals, and students, in the USA and abroad, are encouraged to enter.

Entry guidelines

  • For wall-mounted works: up to 3 feet by 4 feet.
  • For posters: 8.5 x 11 inches, 11 x 18 inches, 24 x 36 inches.
  • Pedestal-mounted sculpture and multimedia: up to 5 feet high with a base up to 20 x 20 inches.
  • Submissions may be new or previously created work that has not received an award in another contest. School projects are acceptable.
  • Each artist may submit up to three entries, with a separate entry form and each image saved with the artist’s name and submission number (i.e. Bob Williams submission 1.jpeg). Images must be well-lit, in focus, and on a plain white background. Sculptures and multimedia pieces may have up to three images per entry.
  • Artists will bear the cost (and risk of damage) of shipping both ways for entries accepted into the exhibition.

The following will not be accepted due to gallery limitations: digital art requiring a computer screen or ceiling-mounted sculpture. This is an exhibition of authentic human-made art. Works created by artificial intelligence are prohibited.

Judging

Submissions open on December 1, 2023, and close on February 1, 2024. Jurors will make final decisions, and finalists will be notified by February 10.

Eco-Nuclear Solutions has convened a group of artists and nuclear activists to juror the exhibition on the basis of artistic merit and how the work communicates the value of nuclear power.

Museum installation guidelines for the Community Gallery

The Fitchburg Art Museum Community Gallery requires a professional presentation of art suitable for hanging. Submissions must comply with the following requirements:.

  • All art must be ready to install and be professionally presented.
  • 2-D works by youths must be matted.
  • 2-D works by adults must be framed and strung with hanging wire.
  • All submissions must conform to the size guidelines.

Artwork selected for the exhibition

Winners and finalists will be notified by Feb. 10, 2024 and the art must be delivered, ready for hanging, to Susan Tordella, 5 Hedgeway St., Ayer, Massachusetts, 01432 USA, by March 3, 2024. Do not deliver it to the Fitchburg Art Museum.
